Sign language is recognised as a language in its own right and
uses gestures of the hands and the rest of the body, including the
face, to communicate with the deaf or hard of hearing. A number of
sign languages have developed separately in different countries.
Within the English speaking world American, British and Irish sign
language have all evolved separately.
Sign language varieties are as extensive as any other language
families or databases, with many different dialects. In the UK, the
main varieties are BSL (British Sign Language), Irish Sign Language
and St. Vincent's variety, amongst others
British Sign Language is a language used by approximately 70,000
deaf people in the UK. As the preferred language of the British
deaf community, it is accepted by both linguists and the UK
Government as a language in its own right. A person who uses
British Sign Language may not always understand written English.
This makes the need for BSL interpreters even more important.

Working with British Sign Language Interpreters
The role of a BSL interpreter is similar to an other language
interpreter, to ensure that people speaking different languages can
communicate easily and without misunderstanding.
Every English word doesn't necessarily have a corresponding sign
in BSL. The interpreting process therefore involves expressing the
same meaning using a different vocabulary and grammatical
structure.
This means
- Only one message can be interpreted at a time. So, in a meeting
it's vital that only one person speaks or signs at a time. If this
doesn't happen the interpreter might have to ask people to speak in
turn so that the conversation can be interpreted accurately.
- As you can imagine such a physical and mental role as a BSL
interpreter can be quite exhausting. When in full flow interpreters
may be processing up to 20,000 words per hour.
- For meetings and events longer than 2 hours at least two
interpreters are necessary.
