'Sign Language Idol' held in US

Deaf university students have taken part in a 'Pop Idol style' talent contest in North Carolina.

The fourth annual American Sign Language (ASL) Idol event took place at the University of North Carolina Gainsborough (UNCG), where contestants sang and danced to popular songs using sign language, reports news-record.com.

According to the news provider, UNCG ASL Professor Sam Parker said that the event is a good way for the university to give something back to the community.

Contestant Laverne Francis, in her third year at UNCG, added: "It's very empowering for me. It builds my confidence in my signing."

She went on to say that she wants to open the first school for the deaf back near her home on the Virgin Islands after her graduation.

Last week the Lakeland Echo reported that two police officers in Lancaster have been learning sign language so they can run a bi-monthly meeting for deaf members of the public.
