Public Sector Translation

Public Sector Translation

Translation, interpreting and transcribing are just a few of the language services that are required on a daily basis by the public sector. ALS currently provides face to face interpreters, sign language interpreters and translators to a range of public service organizations including police forces, hospitals and local councils.
Whether an organization needs to communicate housing information to local residents, or explain a criminal charge to a detainee, being able to share this information in the end user’s language is essential.

We send face to face interpreters to hospitals around the UK daily, to ensure people understand their diagnosis and can explain their symptoms to doctors and nurses. Similarly, interpreters assist police forces, courts and prisons in their communication with detainees and witnesses so that miscarriages of justice do not occur as a result of language barriers. The same applies to those who have hearing or sight difficulties and we can provide interpreters trained in sign language and deafblind interpreting.

Additionally we provide services to government and non-government organizations such as the United Nations and the International Red Cross, to enable them to quickly provide support in multiple languages, to those that need it most around the world.

Security

Not only do your language services need to be accurate in these sensitive situations, but they also need to be confidential, which is why all of our freelance linguists have to adhere to a code of conduct and must sign NDAs before undertaking confidential translations.

All translations are managed through online project management portal, TalkBase.NET. TalkBase.NET is extremely secure and works, as all our systems do, on a 128-bit SSL secure encryption (the same security level as online credit card payment facilities such as PayPal or MoneyBookers). In addition, the company’s in-house IT security systems are accredited to ISO 27001 standard, following a rigorous assessment phase.

Any customer information is transmitted via SSL encrypted channels and stored in our data centre.

To underpin all this we work to the BS EN 15038 standard for translation as well as using the ISO 9001 framework.

Security and Confidentiality

Clearly Government translation is highly sensitive whatever of the content. To ensure security and confidentiality at all times we keep all customer files in password protected files which we store on servers based at a secure site in London. The servers are housed in the same secure building as used by all the main banks and are bomb, flood and fire protected.

Translation Memory – GovMem

Like any large organisation, Government documents can contain a large amount of repeated text. To ensure that this is translated consistently and that you are only charged once for this re-used text, we use translation memory. We have developed a tool specifically for Government GovMem, for more details click on the tab above.

Customer Portal

So that you can access our services as easily as possible we have a secure customer portal Talkbase.net. This site allows you and your team to view all your new and previous projects. It also allows you to review your translation projects online in real time and submit amendments and changes. This cuts down the need for translations to be moved around via email and because it’s online you can access it wherever you are in the world at any time.

Local Authority Language Services

Local authorities are increasingly needing translation and language skills which enable them to communicate with ever diverse communities. Local government needs to ensure that the full raft of services are available to all members of society and that ethnic groups are not excluded. Applied Language already handle the translation for local authorities up and down the UK including Housing Associations, local councils and other government funded bodies.

Helping you deliver front line services

Delivering front line services in local government is hard enough without having to handle extra issues of culture and language. Applied Language are perfectly positioned to help you communicate with your communities in their own languages, whether using translation or interpreting services.

Education Language Solutions

Language is Not a Barrier to Education

Language shouldn’t be a barrier to education and by using professional translation there is no reason it should be. To ensure that the translations we provide you are as accurate as possible we use specialist educational linguists. These professionals are skilled educators and will ensure that all the details and nuance of language are faithfully reproduced in the translation.

Second generation translation professionals

For education translation we often use second generation translators. This ensures that the final translated document will be in the language that your students are used to reading. For example, if you have a document for Hindi speakers living in the UK they will speak a slightly different dialect to Hindi speakers living in India.

Language Solutions for Housing

Translation Helping Housing Associations Speak to Their Communities

Finding a new home, looking after it and ensuring that the rent’s paid on time is one of the most stressful things you can do. Doing this is even harder when English isn’t your first language. This is why using professional translation is so important to ensure that the right details and information are communicated.

We have lots of experience in translating information for Housing Associations up and down the country. We translate everything from information posters, to tenancy agreements and multi language websites.

Instant Telephone Interpreting services

A lot of the work in housing associations is done at the front desk face to face. To help your handle your customers’ issues quickly and efficiently, we have developed a Pay As You Go Instant Telephone Interpreting service. This service means that your staff are only a phone call away from having an interpreter on the end of a phone line in seconds.

Translation Memory – GovMem

Much of the text that is translated across an organisation has a large amount of repetition. It could also be that different people in your organisation are all buying this same translation separately. If all these ends are not tied up then you can end up paying for the same translation twice.

By using GovMem, our special translation memory for government and local authorities you will save on the cost of translation across your organisation and gain access to the same translations already carried out by other government bodies who have signed up.

What does this mean?

A lot of documents which local and national government publish hold either exactly the same information or very similar content. Using GovMem means that if a Housing Association has guidelines for a rent book translated into Hindi and you have the same or very similar copy, then you can use the translation which has already been done. This will save you time and money in your budget.

How does Translation Memory work?

For any large or ongoing project Applied Language Solutions uses technology called Translation Memory. Every sentence we translate for you will be remembered in a database for future use, this brings the benefits of:

  • Increased quality of translation as the same terminology and descriptions are used throughout translated material across the company
  • A considerable reduction in turnaround times as translators are not having to re-translate every repeated sentence or paragraph
  • Dramatic cost savings as repeated text is only charged at a third of the normal price. This charge is in place as the translator will still check the context of repeated sentences

Whatever material is being translated, there are considerable benefits, and the longer this is used the better the benefits get. It is particularly powerful when used on manuals, user guides, training material and other technical documents where you could see savings of up to half the previous costs.

What about confidentiality?

Confidentiality is always a high priority with us and GovMem is no different. Only government organisations who have agreed to share their translation memories will be part of GovMem and the actual documents will never, be shared or passed on. GovMem only ever shows the passages of text that have been translated before and match the new translation.

"We went through seven local translation companies before we found Applied Language Solutions. Not only have they met our needs for four different languages, they have been very helpful and informative if any adjustments were ever needed. We have been with them for over a year and are happy to continue for many more!"
