Simplified Chinese Translation Services

How do you tell which type of written Chinese is appropriate for your target market?

Chinese translation is not as simple as it may seem as Chinese can be written using either Traditional characters or Simplified characters. In an effort to promote literacy, the People’s Republic of China introduced a simplified form of writing in 1949 – Simplified Chinese. Using the correct character set is vital to the success of your translation. If your document is intended to be read in mainland China or Singapore, translations will be need to be in Simplified Chinese. If your audience is located in Hong Kong, Taiwan or Macau, Traditional Chinese should be used.

However, if the translation needs to be colloquial – for instance, translating a training handbook for salesmen – the process becomes more complex, because the language habits of different regions have to be taken into consideration.

As you can see, it’s vital that translated documents employ the language customs and styles of the target Chinese audience. Our dedicated staff will be happy to advise you on the type of translation that best suits your needs.

Chinese translation – things to consider

Language is a living thing – it develops and changes constantly. To ensure our linguists keep abreast of the language our Chinese translators live in-county and translate into their mother tongue. But as with most other languages Chinese has it’s own cultural issues so there are always more considerations than just the language and style of copy.

Use of colour in Chinese

In Chinese culture there are three central colours: red, black and white.

  • Red – Symbolises the positive aspects of life such as happiness, wealth, fame etc. Red is always associated with good luck.
  • Black – Associated with dirt, sin, evil, disasters, sadness, cruelty and suffering. Black signifies bad fortune and must not be worn during festivals, wedding celebrations etc. or used in home decoration.
  • White – Intermediate between red and black, balancing the two colours. It signifies moderation, purity, honesty and life, but is also used at funerals as it is believed it can harmonise all elements. It can be used in all rituals and ceremonies as it is essentially neutral.

We have been with them for over a year and are happy to continue for many more!"
