Welsh Language Translation
The highest percentage of Welsh speakers can be found in the
rural areas of Snowdonia, Anglesey and Carmarthenshire. There is
also a Welsh speaking colony in the Chubut region of Patagonia,
Argentina.
In 2000 the teaching of Welsh became compulsory to all school
children up to the age of 16. This has helped reverse the decline
in the language with around 21% of the Welsh population now
speaking Welsh compared to 18% in 1991.
Welsh in the Public Sector
Since the Welsh Language Act was passed by the UK government in
1993, the Welsh and English languages have to be used equally by
public sector bodies in Wales. This means public sector
organisations are required to provide their literature in both
Welsh and English wherever possible.
