Although global companies are generating more and more content
daily, it's estimated that less than 1% ever actually leaves its
original language (according to research unit Common Sense
Advisory).
That's why we have designed self-serve machine translation and
customized MT as part of our SmartMATE
solution, to help to tackle the 'content mountain' that exists
within global organisations but is often not translated due to cost
and time constraints.
It's not always viable to have everything fully translated by a
human which is why a blended approach that incorporates machine
translation and post editing is the ideal solution and is becoming
increasingly popular.
Machine Translation
Machine translation, in its rawest form, is ideal for
non-critical or user generated content including customer
enquiries, intranet pages, forums or content where a good gist is
enough. Our SmartMATE engines are built on Moses statistical
machine translation technology and are fully customised to our
customers based on existing corpora, translation memories and
glossaries. Processing content through a custom-built engine means
that the output will be much more accurate and therefore of higher
quality which makes the job of the post editor much easier.

Post Editing of Machine Translation
Post Editing of
Machine Translation improves machine translation output
significantly, helping it to reach human translation quality
while benefiting from the speed and low cost of machine
translation.
We can provide either a light or a heavy edit. A light
edit will mean that the linguist "cleans up" the content making it
understandable and correct in terms of its meaning with spelling
and grammar correction made. The heavy edit however takes
style into acocunt, which is where human quality can be
achieved.
Human Translation - still relevant?
There are, of course, still many content types, such as press
releases and other highly style-reliant marketing collateral that
are not always going to be suitable for machine translation.
It may therefore be important to continue to have this material
human translated by a native-speaking linguist with specialist
technical skills relevant to your industry.
